Enquiry
The client, a UK line builder, required an easy-to-maintain and robust filtration system for their zinc/nickel dissolution tank. Due to the filter chamber operating on the dissolution tank itself opposed to the actual plating tanks, it was a project necessity to provide high volumes of filter media surface area.
An added challenge to the project was the combination of a physically large filtration system being needed whilst limited space was available on site.
Key Challenges
- High Volume of Filter Media Surface Area: Large diameter filtration chambers containing 18 x 20’’ filter cartridges were required to ensure increased plating periods prior to the media being blocked.
- Limited Space: A compact design was essential for seamless integration into the existing setup, which entailed installation underneath the plating facilities mezzanine floor.
- Ease of Maintenance: Due to the location of the equipment, the system needed to allow for quick and simple filter cartridge replacement.
Solution
To meet the client’s requirements, we supplied two EPF1820 filter chambers, each fitted with 18 pieces of 20” depth wound filter cartridges. This configuration provided an extensive filtration media surface area to efficiently manage the process.
Each chamber was designed to achieve a flow rate of 48,000 l/hr (800 l/pm), giving excellent tank turnover rates and maintaining the quality of the solution.

Design of EPF1820 Filter Chamber supplied
Challenging the space constraints, we mounted the chambers on a bespoke 4-pillar base, allowing room for installation pipework between the pillars. Furthermore, the height of the legs on the 4-pillar base were reduced ensuring the filter chambers would fit underneath the mezzanine floor.
Additionally, at the client’s request, we modified the outlet valve to a 90 degree angle to accommodate their existing pipework arrangement.

Close up of inlet/outlet positions
At only 1.1m in height and using 20’’ length filter cartridges, the filter chamber design facilitates easy maintenance, allowing operators to quickly replace filter cartridges when needed.

Existing Paper Discs
Heavy and labour intensive.

Would Cartridges Supplied
Light and easy to maintain.
Results
The client reported a significant improvement in filtration efficiency and overall quality in processes. The output from their plating line has improved notably, with a reduction in unwanted particulates.
Our design has given the operators ‘peace of mind’ due to the simplicity and ease of changing out filter cartridges. We have eliminated the labour-intensive process of heavy lifting disc stacks and replaced with a user friendly design.
The custom modifications we made to the outlet connection and the space-saving design were particularly appreciated, ensuring smooth integration with their existing setup.
