Enquiry

A chemical manufacturing client approached us in search of a solution for emptying vessels of different sizes at their facility. The customer wanted to eliminate the manual handling of liquids from vessels and requested a user friendly and cost-effective electric pump system that could handle their various sizes and depths of vessels.

Key Challenges

  1. Multiple Vessel Sizes: The client needed a solution for emptying 50L drums, 205L drums, and IBCs.
  2. Chemical Resistance: The process involved handling alkaline-based solutions that required suitable materials of construction.
  3. Ease of Use: Since the customer was transitioning from manual handling to electric pumps, operator usability was paramount.
  4. Cost-Effectiveness: The client required a budget-friendly solution that could be implemented across their operations.

Solutions

Ones of the main benefits to the customer was that we could use one motor on various pump end lengths which effectively allowed one motor to become three different pumps. Attaching the drum pump end to the motor is simple, as shown below.

After selecting Polypropylene materials which is suitable for alkali solutions, we utilised a variable speed motor which is specifically designed with operator usability in mind. The electric drive motor is manufactured with a variable speed controller providing the option of a slow start up, and thus reducing the potential dangers of chemical splash back. As demonstrated below, the controller can be used to reduce the flow speed.

We then looked at the size of the vessels required to empty and selected 3 different pump end lengths to suit the vessel in question.

We supplied three pump end lengths to accommodate various containers:

700mm for 50L drums

1000mm for 205L drums

1200mm for 1000L IBCs

This tailored approach ensured optimal performance for each vessel size while maximizing flexibility.

Results

The customer was extremely satisfied with the outcome. The drum pump system not only met their expectations for usability and safety but also offered a cost-effective, scalable solution.

Due to the success of this project, the customer has since placed multiple orders of drum pumps for use in different areas in their facility including pumps ends in PVDF materials for use with acidic solutions.

Empire Pumps Drum Pumps are available in lengths of 700mm to 1800mm in materials of Polypropylene, PVDF and Stainless Steel. Air driven motors are also available.
